Introduction: C.A.B. (nyc)
These pages contain an educated, often subjective, and occasionally incorrect collection of my thoughts as I wander through the oversaturated under-understood streets of the many New York contemporary art galleries.
This blog will provide the following:
This blog will provide the following:
- The List
The basic blueprint of an art museum provides both direction and confinement. Though contemporary commercial art galleries hold more exciting, experimental and current works of art without any entrance fee, no hallway or "path" exists (not to mention outdoor signage). Furthermore, with nearly 500 galleries in Chelsea alone, FINDING the art takes significantly more time than viewing it.
Regular entries in cabnyc will list a handful of the nearly 100 gallery shows I see per week, along with brief comments on each. To get a quick "what to see now", click my Top 5 link to see the "must see" shows currently on view.
I'm always up for suggestions, so if you don't see something on "The List" that you believe SHOULD be, e-mail me ASAP!! Even if it doesn't make The Top 5, I will certainly respond to the show. - The Comment
Too many reviews lack criticism and instead "summarize" a show. Though nice, this is hardly entertaining and tends to function more as "advertising" than as critical opinion.
Every week, I will write reviews of current shows in blog entries: the best and the worst.
All visitors are encouraged to leave comments in response to either my thoughts, or the show directly. Check back to see what others are saying! - The Paint
This site will also provide something rarely seen in any gallery: a work in progress. I am not an "artist" in the sense that I do not paint for profit, applause, expression or originality. I paint as a way to explore and understand what I see. This site will show the most current state of any given painting I am working on. There will be no image history or notifications of "completeness". To see how a painting is progressing, you'll have to check back on a regular basis. Only when the next painting appears will you know that the last painting was completed.
In this you are invited to share in the process more so than the product, as I do. The intention is not to promote my paintings, but to mix the "art making" and the "art viewing" crowds to a greater extent on this website.
NOTE: In order to keep the focus of this site on the galleries, any and all comments relating to my paintings will be deleted.
Please feel free to comment at the end of any entry, or e-mail me directly
