Smithson's Floating Island

Review
Robert Smithson: Floating Island
Minetta Brook(under "projects")
thru 9/25/05
  • The New York Times quotes Diane Slamash, director of the Minetta Brook Organization, as referring to the Floating Island as “The Anti-Gates” (referencing Cristo’s “The Gates of Central Park” installed this last winter). It seemed nearly impossibly to be in Manhattan during “The Gates” and not see the gates, as they covered every inch of Central Park with a road cone orange. The event (also around 30 years in the making) was overhyped and overcrowded. The Floating Island however, like the Spiral Jetty, took planning, detailed directions, timing, and a little luck, to experience a few minutes of something indescribable, which by the way, was completely missed by a man next to me reading a paper in the park.(see full review)

Thankfully, I can at least view photos of the Spiral Jetty from websites of other people. I've been to the Great Salt Lake once. My family drove over to Antelope Island. The land bridge, which joined the island to the mainland, separated the lake, rendering the water on one side of the bridge stagnant, and really smelly.
